Creo que era una "obligación" para mi comenzar este nuevo año con algo especial, y puesto que estos tios tienen un hueco muy grande en mi corazón, creo que era la manera mejor de empezar el 2009 de este blog. Son de lo mejor que nunca escuché, y aún recuerdo cuando entré por casualidad en su mypace y comencé a saber la calidad que atesoraban. Dia tras dia, durante semanas, no dejé de visitar su web para poder escuchar sus temas, buscando incesantemente sus discos entre cientos de blogs y foros, hasta que por fin, conseguí uno de sus discos. Sin duda tienen algo especial, y en este su cuarto ep, continúan con el camino marcado en su disco "Five Sm.ell City", con un gran tema inicial, "If I could only be sure" con un buen riff de guitarra y unos coros bien elegidos, y donde el órgano de Hank Twain le da un aire muy especial al tema. "Bum like you" es el tema Mä.rvel por escelencia. Rápido y donde Vocalo disfruta de su voz y de su guitarra de una manera bestial, y donde el bajo de Animalizer hace reververar tu estómago. "Livin' on a prayer" ya lo conoceis, fué el tema que abría el recopilatorio del aniversario del blog. Una versión que parece imposible hacer de un tema ya de por si grande,pero incluso el autor se queda pequeño ante semejante derroche de energía y saber hacer. Los dos siguientes temas van muy en la onda de lo que estaban preparando para el año siguiente, con melodías mas trabajadas y riffs mas suaves, aunque no por ello pasan a ser relleno, creo que son muy buenos temas y pegadizos, paso lógico para una banda que aspira a ser de las mas grandes que ha dado Suecia. Amsterdam es el tema más rápido que han grabado nunca, con un pedazo de riff machacón y veloz, quizás acercandose mucho al Punk, pero entre el trabajo de guitarra y un piano machacándo continuamente, consiguen hacer un autentico Rock'n'Roll muy divertido. En fin, uno de los mejores trabajos de los Mär.vel, que como suele suceder con los Ep's y los 10", saben a muy poquito, pero nos queda la tranquilidad de que su tercer Lp está en camino y, seguro, será una autentica bomba.
MÄR.VEL consists of the three super heroes Vocalo, Animalizer and The Ambas.sador. From their headquarters, located in Brooklyn, NYC, they struggle hard to put an end to organized crime and the evil organization SACO led by Dr Spats.
Behind this power trio we find three young guys from Linköping, Sweden; John Steen, Ulrik Bostedt and Tony Samuelsson who founded the band Marvel during their high school exchange year in Colorado, USA., 2002.
After three celebrated vinyl singles (“Marvellous”, New York Power Hitters, 2002; “Heroine Tracks”, New York Power Hitters/Black JuJu/Evergreen Terrace, 2003; “Bedlam At The Embassy”, Black JuJu, 2004) MARVEL released their album Five Smell City early summer 2005 also on Black JuJu. And following up the kind reviews they released their CD EP “Unle.ashed” in february 2006.
“Five Sm.ell City” shows off the high energy rock ‘n’ roll that has already become Mar.vel’s trademark. Guided by bands such as Kiss and The Sto.oges, this young bunch of untamed riff masters with a genuine feel for the groove have already managed to manifest their world domination program. Marvel carelessly avoids all rock clichés known to man so you won’t find any songs about cars, beer and babes. Instead you’ll get to know super heroes with broken hearts, a weather goddess and how small town madness influences the success of a young hungry rock band stuck in a city of five smells. And of course a song about a Swedish tennis star that has had problems finding a decent occupation since he put his racket to rest.
On “UNLEA.SHED” Marvel have devoted themself to render six brilliant yet wildly diverse songs by other artists (aka covers) into their trademark style of rock 'n roll.
Apparently the biggest radio network in Sweden like these superheroes too since no less than three songs from the debute album have been playlisted so far. “Now I Believe It” was the latest one during late summer 2005. “Now I Believe It” was also noticed by the Swedish TV-show Musikbyrån which is the one show with most influence and “strength” in Sweden. They showed MARV.ELs “Now I Believe It”-video on their website during a three week period.
The trio left Keith, their previous manager, in the end of a long and moderately warm summer 2005 due to strange and abnormal eating habits and they turned to Papa Bear at HOMBRE Productions Inc. for spiritual guidance and Tattoo Powers and Original Outlaw Advertising. The rest my friends is history.
Less than a day after the release of UNLEA.SHED!, the web version (P3 Rock) of P3 aired the first track from it and kept doing so. The radioshow Rundgång also at the same time celebrated the band as "the pride of Östgötaslätten". Not bad.
Our heroes spend their days playing videogames and helping old ladies across the street awaiting world domination and a lifelong quest of fighting evil and the henchmen that follows in the shadows. And once in a while they drop what they do to enter the recording studio, sometimes naked, to get the work done.
The video for "I Wanna Know You (just a little bit better)" has been showing itself regularly on MTV (the videoshoot got a lot of attention in media due to crazed wrestlers, carcrash and a sudden visit from the local firebrigade) and the single "Thunderb.lood Heart" is right now on rotation on national Swedish radio P3.
The new album "Thunderb.lood Heart" was released digitally the 29:th of October 2007 and the physical release in Sweden took place the 29:th of November. The album was released in Germany and the rest of the world the 29:th of February 2008, just in time for MÄR.VEL's tour in Germany and surrounding countries that went between the 6:th and 23:rd of March.
